STEAM Activities To Do At Home With Kids: Episode 3 BREATHE!

It’s Nearly Spring: BREATHE!

Hi All, I hope you’re all hanging in there! My college freshman son just learned he will not be going back to school until next fall since his school is shut down due to COVID-19 virus. His classes are online from now until the end of his year in May. He’s really sad and disappointed! I am so sad for him…

All of this change brings uncertainty and anxiety, but we still have each other to lean on during these difficult times. Cool-ology® is committed to bringing you free STEAM enrichment ideas you and your children can use right here on the blog. Cool-ology® is also offering online ZOOM classes! Check out the schedule at https://cool-ology.com/new/events/. More will be added each week.

One of the best things we ALL can do is go outside! Breathe, take in the sights, smells, and sounds of the beauty of nature. Here are some activities you can do while out there.

Color Nature Walk

The Dollar Store has great, inexpensive bags with handles and cheap markers. Use the markers to create squares of color. Look for natural objects that match the colors on the bag. Even though spring is just beginning here in the northern hemisphere, you’d be surprised about how many different colored natural objects you can find! Look for berries, moss, lichen, early bloomers, etc. When you get home, put your objects in groups according to color. How many of each color can you find??

Shape Nature Walk

Take a “Shape Walk”! Look for both natural and human-made shapes on your walk. How many 2D and 3D shapes can you find and name? This can be as simple as finding squares, triangles, rectangles, etc for the little ones, or made much more complicated for older kids (find quadrilaterals, regular and irregular polygons, etc). Collect small sticks, rocks, and other natural items on your Shape Walk. Once home, can you replicate the shapes with your stones or sticks on a tray or plate! You can also make 2D and 3D shapes with marshmallows/gumdrops/jellybeans and either toothpicks or pieces of spaghetti or linguini. Try it!
