Tulip Trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) are currently in bloom here in the northeast United States! This species of tree, among the largest in North America, is a member of the Magnolia family. They produce gorgeous flowers that look like tulips (hence the name) in late spring. If you’re lucky, you just might catch sight of one like the example above in early to mid-June.
Tulip trees can grow up to 164 feet (50 meters) high! The buds develop in winter and grow big and plump right before they burst into their brilliant yellow, orange, and green flowers.
The very distinct leaves of the tulip tree are curved near the stem and elegantly fall to a double-pointed notch at the opposite end. The leaves turn a golden yellow in the fall.
Keep your eyes open for these gorgeous beauties in the next few days. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a few!
